The Basics

Gear

Picture
Note: For safety reasons, all of the gear listed is required to play in scrimmages and games. There is some optional gear such as as rash guards, elbow pads, and knee pads.
1. Snorkel and mouthguard
The snorkel allows you to breathe on the surface with your face in the water, so you can see the game. The mouthguard protects you from stray pucks, elbows, etc.
2. Cap
The cap color indicates which team you are on (black or white) and your player number. Water polo caps are used in underwater hockey.
3. Mask
The mask allows you to see underwater. Diving or snorkeling masks are used rather than swim goggles so the mask pressure can be equalized when diving (through your nose).
4. Fins
Fins help you swim faster.
5. Stick
The stick is used to move the puck. The stick color (black or white) matches the cap to indicate which team you are on.
6. Puck
You win a point by getting the puck into the opposing team's goal.
7. Glove
The glove protects your hand from abrasion and impacts.

Diving

Players dive to the bottom of the pool to get to the puck. They must hold their breath until they resurface.

Pool depths can range from 3 feet to 13 feet, depending on the pool.

Scoring

A point is scored by getting the puck into the opposing team's goal.

Passing

The puck can be "flicked" with the stick to pass it to another player or to score a goal. Sticks are designed to help elevate the puck off the pool bottom.
